About Sophisticated Vintage

My love of things old and found was learned at at an early age at my grandfather's feet, walking beaches and woods and encountering the world's treasures. A peach or cherry pit became a carved basket in his whittler's hands. A stone or shell or twig achieved place of honor on a mantel.

The passion to collect was easily transformed with the discovery of flea markets, and the thrill of the hunt began in earnest. From Southern country auctions to New England barn sales - each one was an opportunity to learn and hone my "eye" for the wonderful.

My tastes have evolved over the years, with the love of the "whimsical" being the driving force. A carved folk art statue pairs beautifully with a Piero Fornasetti recipe plate or C. Jere oversized vegetable peeler. An Abercrombie leather pig footstool sits proudly next to a stack of Asian painted tea tables.

I've had the privilege of exhibiting at wonderful shows - from Antiques Week in New Hampshire to Heart of Country in Nashville - and being part of renowned group shows - Yellow Garage Antiques, Firehouse Antiques, South Pointe Antiques (don't we miss that fabulous Adamstown shop!) - as well as having my own group shops in Chestertown, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. And I've learned to appreciate that a $40 item can be just as terrific as a $400 item - pleasure is where you find it.

Sophisticated Vintage began with friend and shop partner Ellen in Maryland, and has now traveled with me to Florida. Always ready for adventure - see you on the journey! - Marilyn
